Jacob Chi was born in Qingdao, China. At age 17, he became the youngest Concertmaster of the Beijing Opera Company; at 23, he was the Company’s conductor and composer. Chi completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestra Conducting from Michigan State University with Leon Gregorian, and a MM in violin performance from the University of Michigan with Jacob Krachmalnick, former concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Chi’s conducting studies brought him to Tanglewood with Seiji Ozawa and Gustav Meier, the International Conducting Workshop, and other workshops with Leonard Slatkin, Rossen Milanov, and others.
Dr. Chi is currently a full professor of music at Colorado State University-Pueblo (1997-present). He taught at Miami University (1993-1997) and the University of Southern Colorado (1991-1993). Chi also teaches conducting at universities and conservatories in China and Mexico. In 2006 and 2008, with Gustav Meier and Dr. Benjamin Loeb, Chi taught the International Conducting Workshop for young professionals in Chihuahua Mexico.
Being the music director of the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra since 1991, Maestro Chi is also the principal conductor of the Marquette Symphony in Michigan, and was the artistic and music director of the Chihuahua State Philharmonic at Chihuahua Mexico from 2005 to 2007. He guest conducts nationally and internationally. Maestro Chi had conducted the Denver Symphony (Colorado), Colorado Springs Symphony (Colorado), El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestras (El Paso, Texas), Taos Symphony (New Mexico), Jackson Symphony (Michigan), and Midland Symphony (Michigan). Internationally, he conducted Vladimir State Symphony Orchestra (Vladimir, Russia), Northern Czech Philharmonic (Prague, Czech), Orchestra Citta’Di Grosseto (Grossetto, Italy), Mexico State Orchestra (Toluca, Mexico), Michoacan State Symphony Orchestra (Morelia, Mexico), Echternach International Festival (Luxembourg), Festival International Chihuahua (Chihuahua, Mexico), Chihuahua University Symphony Orchestra (Chihuahua, Mexico), New Symphony Orchestra (Sofia, Bulgaria), Xiamen Philharmonic (Xiamen, China), and Hua-ou Philharmonic (Qingdao, China) – of which Chi is the principal guest conductor and artistic advisor. Chi’s conducting repertoire includes the standard symphonic music, opera, ballet, and popular music, from Baroque to contemporary and from the West to the East.
By virtue of his significant professional contributions to American society in 1994, Chi was selected among thirteen other Asian conductors, along with Seiji Ozawa, Zubin Mehta and Bright Sheng, for the Premiere Edition of Who’s Who Among Asian Americans. In 2000, he was listed in the 17th edition of the International Who’s Who in Music and the Musicians Directory.

Jacob Chi In A
Chen & He Butterfly Violin Concerto
Violinist: Joseph Lin
“Jacob Chi was the phenomenal conductor and Joseph Lin the ethereal violinist in a breathtaking account of “Butterfly Lovers’ Concerto” by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao.”
“The incredible Chi extracted superb accompaniment from a wonderfully pliable Youth Orchestra. Chi inspired the musicians as he jumped up and down and waved his arms as if he were plunging a dagger. The standing ovation, from an audience reluctant to let the performers go, demanded bow after bow from the orchestra.”
“Chi took the Youth Symphony in hand for a short Chinese “Dance of the Yao People” that made the music sound like a different orchestra. He drew out confidence from the players and they responded with a power punch.” (B. Ligon, El Paso Inc.)
It was especially fun to watch director Chi passionately involve himself in the performance. His theatrics on the directors stand showed how intensely motivated he was by the dynamic performance. (Beethoven performed to perfection, J. Miller, High Street Journal)
Mit Barber Gelang Chi eine Interpretation von groBer Schonheit und innerer Stimmigkeit. (Zauberhafte Sandrine Cantoreggi, Echternacher Festspiele)
…. How would the fine Colorado Springs Symphony respond to Pueblo’s vital, so physically expressive conductor, Jacob Chi….“It’s MAGIC!” The combination showed Chi an enchanter who led the polished symphony with mimelike expression and dancing dynamism….Conductor, 83 musicians and soloist seemed to bond together as one, their more apparent assets unfailing balance and obvious familiarity with the piece, as with the “Fifth” to follow. (Pueblo Chieftain)
Conductor Jacob Chi led all to a higher level of excellence. It’s easy to exhaust adjectives for the symphony’s maestro, so I’ll simply say he radiated his uniquely dynamic, musical Chi energy, as usual. (Pueblo Chieftain)
Conductor Jacob Chi continues to spark the ever-developing symphony. This kinetic conductor fans the blaze he’s ignited, masterfully stoking the musical fire. (Pueblo Chieftain)
Symphony shines as new era begins. (Pueblo Chieftain)
The second maestro Chi, charismatically draws from the orchestra all the power and moody nuance of Beethoven. He does this with such exuberant physicality that his conducting seems the vibrant performance of an aerobic ballet. (Pueblo Chieftain)
Conducting with consummate passion, Chi vivified this tour of the exhibition past all expectation. From the moment the trumpets introduced the Promenade, all save the most minuscule moments excited without fail. (Pueblo Chieftain)
The performers themselves – under the direction of Pueblo’s Jacob Chi – were showcased, for the work was obviously difficult, though it was pleasing to hear. (Pueblo Chieftain)
The PSO’s success owes much to Chi’s immense capacity for communication, his rehearsal techniques, and his ability to yield himself totally to the work he conducts. (The Pueblo Ledger)
