Simone Porter, violin soloist
PROGRAM
VIVALDI: The Four Seasons
PIAZZOLA: The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
Violinist Simone Porter is the virtuoso soloist in Vivaldi’s dazzlingly imaginative evocation of the sights, sounds and sensations of the Italian seasons. The Four Seasons violin concertos are so richly detailed you can feel the sirocco of summer, hear the dancing villagers of Autumn and slip on the ice of a Venetian winter. The master of the New Tango, Ástor Piazzolla, brought the wild dance of Buenos Aires into the concert hall. There’s an apt nod to Vivaldi in Leonid Desyatnikov’s sensational string arrangements of the Estaciones Porteñas, but they have an atmosphere that’s unique to Buenos Aires – fiercely sensual in summer, hazy and melancholic in winter, all moving to the heartbeat of the tango. Vivaldi’s seasons enfold Piazzolla’s in this dance around the year.
Maddie will perform the movements 1&2 of Sonata in A Minor by Robert Valentine.
Colleen will perform Polka, Op. 123, No. 6 by Charles Dancla.

Lili Boulanger: Old Buddhist Prayer
Elgar: Cello Concerto
DvoÅ™ák: Symphony No. 8
We celebrate fall by setting our intention with Boulanger’s Old Buddhist Prayer, in which the ASO will be joined by members of the Alexandria Choral Society and Fairfax Choral Society. Elgar wrote one of his last notable works–Cello Concerto in E minor–after enduring both physical and psychological turmoil; this passionate and contemplative work features world-renowned soloist Wolfgang Schmidt. An optimistic, lyrical piece inspired by Bohemian folk music, the program concludes with DvoÅ™ák’s Eighth Symphony.

PROGRAM 1 – IMAGINARY SYMPHONY
PROGRAM:
Wagner: Prelude to Die Meistersinger
Beethoven: Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano in C Major, Op. 56 Rita Sloan, piano Alan Richardson, cello Nicholas Tavani, violin
Lionel Semiatin: Tidbit #1
Imaginary Symphony: William Walton: Symphony No. 1 (first movement) Amy Beach: Gaelic Symphony (second movement) Ethel Smyth: On the Cliffs of Cornwall Arthur Honegger: Symphony No. 3 (third movement)
The 2019-2020 season opens with a program that explores war and peace and the curiosity of conversation. Starting with a grandly spunky overture from Wagner’s well-loved and only comedic opera, Die Meistersinger, the concert features three virtuosic soloists on violin, cello and piano in Beethoven’s inspired Triple Concerto. In the second half the “Imaginary Symphony,” composed of four movements by four composers, depicts visions of pastoral beauty juxtaposed with a war march and a call for peace. This concert commemorates the 75th anniversary year of the D-Day invasion. ASO musician Gene Pohl’s father, Lionel Semiatin, composed Tidbit #1 while fighting on the battlefield at Normandy.

PROGRAM ELGAR: Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1
JOHN LUNN: Downton Abbey Suite
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Lark Ascending
RAVEL: Tzigane
ELGAR: Enigma Variations
You are invited to an evening of all things quintessentially “British”— from the music of Downton Abbey in anticipation of the new movie, to the heavenly soaring of Vaughn Williams’ poetic music, to Sir Edward Elgar’s music of Edwardian grace and artistry.
According to The Guardian, Vaughn Williams’ Lark Ascending “…starts with the darkest, richest sounds a violin can make, then rises to an airy lightness, and it has become far and away Britain’s most popular piece of classical music.” Composed over 100 years ago, on the eve of WWI, this important work carries both a poignancy and beauty that are as powerful as ever. While conjuring images of bucolic, pastural landscapes and the impossible beauty of the skylark’s song, you’ll hear a sense of loss, too, of this difficult time in Britain’s history.
Elgar composed his much-loved Enigma Variations to depict “friends pictured within,” but the so-called enigma is an unplayed theme that he often hinted at but never revealed. The exquisite “Nimrod” Variation, performed for the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, is also heard at the end of the 2017 film Dunkirk.

" I have been a fan of Glass since my teens. In fact, his music drama "The Photographer" was the first live event I attended without an adult, and I have always associated his music with coming of age†says Dinnerstein. “There are almost no concertos written for piano and strings since Bach's time. Both Glass and I have a strong interest in Bach and how his music impacts us today. The pairing of the Bach concerto with his own composition will create myriad strands of connectivity enabling the listener to create bridges between the old and new."
